How to open dxf file in Silhouette Studio?
The cut files available here on the Blog are available in dxf, svg, jpg and pdf formats and most people ask how to open these files in Silhouette Studio. So I decided to do this very simple step by step to help you!
Why aren’t files available in .studio format?
Cut files cannot be made available in .studio format, as this format can only be sold/available in the Silhouette store. That is, any other site is prohibited from making files available in .studio format.
However, Silhouette Studio opens other types of cut files, such as dxf and svg.
Files in dxf format open in the free version of Studio, but files in svg format only open in the Designer Edition, which is a paid version.
What is dxf file?
A DXF file (drawing interchange format) is a type of drawing interchange file used to transfer data between various applications.
It is a binary or ASCII representation of a drawing file. It is often used to share design data between CAD programs, Illustrator and Silhouette Studio.

Before opening a dxf file in Silhouette Studio for the first time, you need to configure the program so that the file opens correctly. These are very simple settings that I explain below and that only need to be done once.

- With Silhouette Studio open, click on File and Open (File > Open) or use the shortcut Ctrl+O.
- Browse your computer for the dxf file you want to open. Click on it and OK.
- Alternatively, you can drag the file from your File Explorer onto the Silhouette Studio workspace.
- When a dxf file is opened in Silhouette Studio, the cut lines will be ungrouped. Therefore, it is recommended that you select all lines and group them (right click > Group).
- Another problem that can occur is lines having a thickness greater than 0 and thus being printed in the file. So always check the thickness of the lines before printing.
- When using a dxf file, the file artwork is not included in the file. You must drag the artwork into the project and center it on the page along with the crop file.
